Environmental impact of the yoga studio

To minimize the environmental impact of the yoga studio :

• we use the Classic Crystal water purification system with reusable glass bottles to ensure that the water we sell has no extra environmental costs – there are zero transport costs, zero plastic bottles to recycle and we are not using the limited ground water supplies as the water is supplied by the municipality
• the sun yoga studio has a state of the art heating system fueled by gas. The MPS series gas heater is rated 5.5/6 stars for energy efficiency and has won the Australian Gas Association’s Appliance of the Year award, as well as Galaxy Awards for the most energy-efficient product five years in a row. They are the most technically advanced, efficient and compact heaters on the market today.
• the humidifier uses a 3-phase electrical supply, which is much more efficient than a normal single phase wall socket
• the glass walls of the sun yoga studio encourage a “green house” effect – the heating effect of the sun is trapped within the studio – just like a garden green house, reducing further the energy required to keep the room warm
• the whole studio including changing rooms and corridors were specifically designed to allow as much natural light into the space as possible, reducing the need for artificial lighting
• over 90% of the artificial lighting is supplied by low energy bulbs (we are working on making this 100%)
• the sun yoga studio was designed as a “room within a room” completely insulated from the buildings outside walls – any heat that escapes simply helps to heat up the common areas and lounge of the studio
• all 13 showers are fitted with Oyxgenics water saving shower heads – this reduces our water consumption by over 65%
• all toilets are fitted with power flushes – reducing water consumption by 40%
• we do not supply plastic bags – we encourage all students to bring their own plastic bags for their damp clothes and towels
• all our plastic and paper is recycled
• we use local companies based within 5km of the Cape Town CBD for gas services etc – minimizing the transport impact of deliveries the studio
• our laundry service uses no bleaches and the laundry is collected and delivered by foot.
